Feeling stressed and anxious are common issues for people today. Whether you are stressed at work, stressed because of relationship break up, stressed due to pressures of family life, it can feel as though you can’t get out away and get some control back in your life. Whether you are a busy mum, a student studying for exams, an employee worried about redundancy you can learn how to change the way you react and feel about the situations facing you in life.
Symptoms of Stress and Anxiety
You may be experiencing a range of physical, emotional and behavioural symptoms because of your stress, such as:
- Eczema or skin complaints
- Upset stomach and digestion problems – perhaps even IBS
- Putting on weight
- Loosing weight
- Stiff neck and shoulders
- Grinding your teeth at night
- Feeling tired and lacking energy
- Irritable and ‘snappy’ with family and colleagues
- Crying and being upset by ‘little’ things
The list is based on some of the issues that my clients have experienced as a result of stress. You can probably add to it from your own experiences.
Continued or prolonged periods of stress can lead to increased levels of adrenaline, noradrenalin and cortisol being in our bodies which over a long time can lead to long term illness including:
- Stomach problems, including ulcers (due to higher cortisol levels), IBS
- Lower immune system (which means we are more likely to catch opportunistic infections)
- Hypertension
- Heart attack
- Stroke
- Chronic depression
- Psychological breakdown
